Ski Touring in Rauris Valley Rewarding climbs, good views and glorious downhills

In the “Meine Spur” ski-touring guide, the mountains of the Goldberg Group are rightly described as a “treasure trove for ski tourers”. In Rauris Valley – and especially at the Kolm Saigurn valley head – every ski tourer truly does find their own pot of gold.

3,000ers such as the Hoher Sonnblick (elev. 3,106 m) with Europe’s highest permanent weather station on its summit, the neighboring Hocharn – at 3,254 m the highest peak in the Goldberg Group – and the Schareck draw tourers, as do the somewhat more laid-back Kolmkarspitz and the Silberpfennig... Regardless of which ski tour in Rauris Valley you eventually opt for, every ascent comes with great rewards! Far away from the hectic outside world, here in Hohe Tauern National Park you can enjoy that sense of peace you only find in the mountains, accompanied by magnificent scenery and runs that are simply amazing. As we said, a true treasure trove for ski tourers indeed!

An absolute prerequisite for a ski tour in open terrain is being thoroughly acquainted with the dangers of winter, planning your tour taking into consideration the weather, snow and avalanche situation, and equipping yourself appropriately.

Ideal starting points for many of the ski tours at Kolm Saigurn valley head (Hocharn, Sonnblick, Schareck, Kolmkarspitz, Silberpfennig) are the two inns located there, the Ammererhof and Naturfreundehaus.

The Kolm Saigurn toll road, which leads from Alpengasthof Bodenhaus out to the valley head (elev. ca. 1,600 m), is closed in winter and generally remains so until the end of March.
Also during the months of winter closure, shuttle service is offered from the Bodenhaus car park both for the Ammererhof and the Naturfreundehaus (against payment).
Once the toll road does open up again, drivers can travel up as far as the Lenzanger car park. Information about toll charges can be found here.
